The Energia Space program, also known as the Energia-Buran program, was a Soviet initiative aimed at developing reusable spacecraft and launch vehicles. It was intended to compete with the United States' Space Shuttle program. The program's centerpiece was the Energia rocket – the most powerful space launcher in history and universal space rocket system. Its first flight was in 1987 after 10 years of development.
