Nuclear Submarine
The first nuclear submarine ever built
USS SSN 571 was the world's first operational nuclear powered submarine and the first submarine to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole on 3 August 1958.
Owing to its nuclear propulsion, the SSN 571 could operate for much longer periods of time than standard diesel-electric subs of the day. As a result, the SSN 571 broke many records in its first few months at sea, primarily related to longevity of unbroken service.
